After the not-so-terribly-successful Karubandika bus photo experience from the first album, Livingstone and I decided to try an artistic rendition for the next LP. Whereas color separations in 1986 were still a big problem for photos in Nairobi, we thought we wouldn't run into the problem with an artist design. Wow, were we ever wrong! And it really hurt us by delaying the LP for well over a month. The lead song on the LP was Mlimani's "Neema". Released first as a single, Neema was an absolute hit in Nairobi, heard frequently on the radio at all times of day or night. We hoped to get the album out and in shops while the song had such great momentum. But alas, we heard an endless string of excuses from our designers as to why they couldn't deliver our artwork. I left all this nonsense for Livingstone to work out but it was by any measure a major fiasco. We suspect that the delay cost us a lot of potential sales; so much so, that Livingstone took the design studio to court for damages. This all started in 1986 but by the time I left Kenya towards the end of 1989, the case had still not come up for trial. I never actually heard the outcome, whether there was any settlement or damages awarded.

Here are the notes from the back cover:

ORCHESTRA DDC MLIMANI PARK have been a powerhouse in the turbulant Dar-es-Salaam music scene for many years. A product of that turbulence, MLIMANI PARK was born in 1978 when twelve musicians, the majority, former members of Dar International, came together under the management of Tanzania Transport and Taxi Services. Since that time, MLIMANI PARK have not been immune from major shifts in personnel and management either. Yet, despite such changes, thay have always managed to remain on top with a continuous string of first-rate hits. In 1982, they were conferred the title "MABINGWA WA MUZIKI NCHINI TANZANIA" (roughly translated, "Champions of Music in Tanzania") as winners of a contest sponsored by the Ministry of Culture in which Tanzania's leading bands took part. In this selection of MLIMINI PARK'S most recent Sikinde sounds, you'll have no trouble understanding why Dar-es-Salaam Development Corporations's MLIMANI PARK continue to reign as MABINGWA WA MUZIKI!    F.L.
